The Clem Project at Bogastow Books was established in 2017 by Walter McClennen with the goal of preserving the history of Clement Scott, Jr., (1914-1985) and his mission of making the world a better place. Remembering Clem – A Good American in Iran – Thirty Years of Christian Service, 1948-1978, The Letters of Clement Scott, Jr., to his Family, was written by Walter McClennen and was published by Bogastow Books in 2017. You can get a copy of the book by contacting The Clem Project at Bogastow Books, P.O. Box 1403, Harwich, MA 02645 – or on Amazon ($24.95).

Clement Scott, Jr., served with the American Presbyterian Mission in Iran from 1948 to 1978. Shortly after the end of World War II, he studied for two years at the Hartford Theological Seminary preparing to be a Mission teacher. In August of 1948, he shipped out from New York City to Iran to serve as a member of the American Mission in Tehran. He made it his life goal to serve the people of Iran – particularly the poor and the needy.

Throughout his life Clement taught in Mission schools, assisted in Mission hospitals and – in the 1960s - led Mission response efforts in the rebuilding of the town of Esmatabad in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake in 1962. After retiring from the American Mission in Iran, Clem served in Cairo, from 1979 to 1985, as a Retirement Volunteer with the Presbyterian Mission in Egypt.

The Christian message of serving others was central to his life and his work. He was an American with an inquisitive and open mind. Family was central to his life although he lived abroad in Iran and Egypt for most of his adult life. He wrote 650 letters to parents and his two sisters during his life; 350 of his letters are preserved in this book with comprehensive historical context, maps and explanatory annotations and photos.

The United States – and the world – will be served well by Remembering Clem and his good example of selflessly serving others.
